Urushi lacquer is one of Japan’s oldest and most demanding crafts — a natural finish made from the sap of a single species of tree, applied in thin layers over weeks or months to produce a surface of remarkable depth, hardness and durability. The word urushi refers both to the tree and to the sap it yields, and the lacquerware made from it has shaped Japanese tableware, architecture and ritual objects for thousands of years.
To understand urushi lacquer is to understand a material that is genuinely alive while it cures and exceptionally tough once it has. What urushi is and where it comes from
Urushi is harvested from the lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum, which grows in Japan, China and Korea. Tappers cut shallow grooves into the bark of a mature tree and collect the milky sap that seeps out, much as rubber is tapped. The yield is tiny — a single tree produces only a small cup of usable sap across an entire season, after which the tree is often cut down — which is one reason genuine urushi has always been a valued material.
The raw sap contains urushiol, the same family of compounds found in poison ivy, so handling it before it cures can cause severe skin reactions. Craftspeople build up tolerance over years of careful work. Once fully cured, however, the lacquer is completely inert and safe, which is why it has long been used on bowls, trays and chopsticks that touch food and lips.
How urushi cures: humidity, not heat
One of the most counter-intuitive things about urushi is how it dries. It does not dry by evaporation in the way paint or varnish does. Instead it hardens through an enzymatic reaction that needs moisture and warmth. An enzyme in the sap, laccase, drives the curing, and it works best in a humid, mildly warm environment — typically around twenty-five degrees Celsius and high humidity.
Because of this, freshly lacquered pieces are placed in a damp cabinet called a furo to cure, rather than left in dry air. The process is slow and cannot be rushed, which is part of why lacquerware is so labour-intensive. Each coat must cure fully, then be polished, before the next is applied. A finished object may carry dozens of layers, every one of which represents a separate day or more of work.
Building up the layers
A piece of fine lacquerware is constructed, not simply coated. The base, or substrate, is usually thin turned or carved wood, but it can also be bamboo, paper, leather or woven fabric stiffened with lacquer. Onto this the maker applies a sequence of coats, each with a purpose.
- Foundation coats — lacquer mixed with fillers such as clay or powdered stone, used to seal the substrate and build a stable, smooth ground. Joints and weak points may be reinforced with cloth set in lacquer.
- Middle coats — successive layers of refined lacquer, each polished back to correct the surface and remove imperfections.
- Finishing coats — the final, often pigmented layers that give the object its colour and its characteristic depth. Black and a deep cinnabar red are the classic tones, achieved with iron and mineral pigments.

Decorative techniques: maki-e, raden and more
Beyond plain coloured surfaces, urushi supports some of the most refined decorative techniques in any craft tradition. The best known is maki-e, literally “sprinkled picture,” in which a design is drawn in wet lacquer and then dusted with fine gold or silver powder before curing. Built up over several stages, maki-e can range from a simple gilded motif to dense, dimensional pictorial scenes.
Other techniques include raden, the inlay of thin slivers of iridescent shell such as mother-of-pearl or abalone, which catch the light against the dark lacquer; chinkin, in which lines are incised into the cured surface and filled with gold; and hyomon, the inlay of cut metal sheet. These methods are often combined, and the finest historical pieces — boxes, inkstone cases, sword fittings and temple furnishings — show several used together with extraordinary control.
Urushi in architecture and beyond tableware
Although most people meet urushi as bowls and chopsticks, it has long served architecture too. Lacquer protects and decorates temple columns, beams, doors and shrine fittings, where its hardness resists wear and its colour signals importance. Many of Japan’s most celebrated religious buildings use lacquered surfaces, sometimes combined with gold leaf, to mark the sacred parts of an interior.
Urushi has also been used as an adhesive and a structural binder — mixed with rice paste and applied with cloth or paper to mend and reinforce. The same lacquer that finishes a bowl can repair it: kintsugi, the art of mending broken ceramics with lacquer dusted in gold, treats the repair as part of the object’s history rather than something to hide. That acceptance of age and breakage connects lacquer directly to wabi-sabi, the aesthetic of imperfection and impermanence that runs through Japanese design.
Living with and caring for urushi lacquerware
Genuine urushi lacquerware is far more practical than its delicate appearance suggests, but it rewards a little care. It dislikes extremes: prolonged direct sunlight can fade and degrade the surface, and the dryness of a dishwasher or the heat of a microwave can crack it. Hand-washing in warm water with a soft cloth, then drying immediately, keeps a piece in good condition for decades.
Used regularly, lacquer develops a soft sheen and the colours deepen — a black bowl mellows, a red one warms — so the object literally improves with handling. This slow change is part of its appeal.
