Not every project needs a structural engineer — but the ones that do, really do. The simplest way to decide is this: if you are changing anything that holds the building up, you need one. If you are not, you usually do not. Here is how that rule plays out in practice.
When you definitely need a structural engineer

- Loft and basement conversions — new floors, openings and, for basements, significant ground and waterproofing considerations.
- A new building — the structure must be designed and signed off.

When you probably don’t

- Removing or adding a genuine non-load-bearing partition.
- Like-for-like repairs that change nothing structural.

The grey areas — and why to ask anyway
Plenty of jobs sit in between. Is that wall load-bearing? Will the new opening need a beam? Is that crack cosmetic or a warning? In these cases a short consultation is cheap insurance. A structural engineer can often tell you in one visit whether you have a real problem or nothing to worry about — and that clarity is worth far more than it costs. As a rule, if you are unsure whether something is structural, treat it as if it is until an engineer says otherwise.
